Harmony #1 – Prologue of John’s Gospel

Joh 1:1-18

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

  1. We’re beginning today our online study of the harmony of the gospels. We’ll basically be going through all four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in chronological order, and when we hit an event that is recorded in more than one book, we’ll read it in each one! The plan is to discuss the text using the comments below each post, so as you read, share what the Lord is teaching you. I encourage you to do the following as you read each post:

    1) Pray! We don’t lean on our understanding, but we trust in the Lord to teach by His Spirit. Even if the passage is familiar, pray and ask for understanding before you read.

    2) Read the text slowly and in it’s entirety! Again, many of these passages will be very familiar, but as Paul said in 1Co 8:2, “…if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.”

    3) Take notes! Note-taking helps to reinforce in our minds what we’ve just read. I’m also amazed at how God opens up more as I begin to write down my thoughts. And when God shares things with you, please share it with us! 🙂

I’m excited to see where the Lord takes us in this study, so let’s begin!

  2. I love that this Harmony of the Gospels reading plan begins with this chapter. This is the New Testament parallel to Gen 1. It sets forth from the very outset the truth that Jesus Christ is God the Creator! (v. 1-2, 10, 14) This passage is one of many as we go through this study that will reinforce that Christ is not only the Son of God but that He is in fact God the Son. Anyone have any other passages that are your go-to passage for the deity of Jesus Christ?

  3. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
    John 1:3

Everyone and everything exists because it was made through Jesus.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
    John 1:4

No life exists except through Jesus. Jesus is the source of our life.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
    John 1:14 NIV

Jesus is Full of God’s grace and Full of all truth. Life, light, God’s grace and real truth are the primary sources of our existence that God freely provides to us because of Jesus sacrifice for us. I am thankful the God calls us His children in verses 12 and 13.

  4. Great verses, brother. Thanks for sharing these! Here’s another good one regarding the deity of Christ. Remember worship is reserved for God alone, and that’s exactly what the disciples did to Jesus:

“Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy…”
    Luk 24:51-52
